Paul Hertzog

Hudson Institute of Medical Research, VIC, Australia

Professor Paul Hertzog is Head of the Centre for Innate Immunity and Infectious Diseases, Associate Director of the Hudson Institute of Medical Research, a NHMRC Senior Principal Research Fellow, Professor at Monash University. Professor Hertzog has an established record of research on innate immune responses in infection, inflammation and cancer. Current projects include: interferon epsilon –a novel cytokine his lab discovered to regulate reproductive tract immune response to infection and cancer; structure-function of interferon receptors; and systems biology of innate immune signaling pathways. His group established the Interferome database and associated bioinformatic tools in order to decipher the immune signatures in disease and functional pathways they represent. This has been particularly applied to breast, prostate and more recently ovarian cancer metastasis, to elucidate diagnostic and therapeutically useful concepts and targets. He has received awards for his research including the international 2013 Milstein Award for Excellence in Interferon and Cytokine Research.
