Obesity is an increasingly global issue and is particularly prevalent in Australia. Obesity increases the risk of type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and cancers. Although the environmental factors like poor diet and lack of exercise are hugely influential on the incidence of obesity, the genetics also plays a major role. The mechanisms of pathways involved in the development of obesity are not well understood. Therefore identifying the genetic mediators is of great importance for the prevention and treatment of obesity.  ~195 genes have been identified in body weight management. All these conserved genes in Drosophila will be screened to identify those involved in obesity. We targeted each conserved candidate in the fruit fly whole body, and then evaluated body weight and triglyceride level. Assessment of this dataset has allowed us to identify genes that cause or prevent obesity in vivo. Functional validation of obesity associated genes has confirmed a few novel candidates that regulate energy homeostasis, and these data inform our basic understanding of metabolic health and in some cases may be targeted as novel therapies for obesity.
